Note on Coverage Updates:

I have noticed that an increasing number of our journals, particularly those that we have had free access to in the past, are putting in place something called a "Legacy Archive." This is a pay item which effectively removes the access to older content, which has become a pay item. TDNet obtains coverage information from the publishers, but I've begun to notice that the coverage that they are putting includes all content that is available online, not taking into account that increasingly the older content is becoming an item we pay for.

Elsevier Freedom Collection:

Previously, with Science Direct, we maintained a Unique Title List that we could log in to with our username/password to access titles that other NAAL libraries subscribed to. With the Freedom Collection, we no longer have to use usernames & passwords to access this content. I'm attaching an explanation from our Science Direct Rep, Kenyatte Baylor.

Hi Michael,

Please find a brief description of the Freedom Collection and how it differs from the older Unique Title List model. I have also attached a list of your Elsevier account team for your convenience. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of additional assistance.

The Freedom Collection is available to ScienceDirect Complete customers only (academic). It offers the chance to get access to all non- subscribed Elsevier journal content at a significantly reduced rate.

This is an access only model and starts from the date of your existing ScienceDirect subscription, with a minimum of four backfile years plus the current year building. Your access is cumulative as long as you renew your license and subscription to the Freedom Collection. Freedom Collection offers no continued access rights for material that was not previously fully subscribed to, if you cancel your ScienceDirect license.

You are not required to enter any additional ID/Password to access the Freedom Collection through Science Direct.

The above mentioned Freedom Collection has largely replaced Unique Title List (UTL) because it will alleviate most title gaps. The UTL model allowed members of a consortium cross access of subscribed titles and in some cases required additional logins.

TDNet Update:

New England Journal of Medicine (Highwire Free Full Text) the free version of this through Highwire has limited access and requires registration. Thus, I'm requesting that TDNet remove the title, which they will as of October 1st. I'm having it taken off the list after repeated complaints about inability to access.

Rights Retention - I've noticed some EBSCO journals where even outside of an embargo period, I can't gain access to full text, because the full text for certain articles isn't there. EBSCO informs me that this is because in certain situations, the rights holder has refused to allow online access to the article.

Nature Biotechnology (EBSCO) This is an example of the rights retention problem mentioned above. I've added a note "coverage incomplete due to publisher restrictions."

Pediatric Emergency Care (OVID) - coverage 2000 - present, has been added to TDNet.

Journal of the National Medical Association (Publisher) - coverage updated to show 4/2006 - present. The publisher informs me that the back issues will be loaded as soon as they can get them in.

Journal of Molecular Medicine (InfoTrac) - Thomson Gale is loading coverage on a number of these journals, and so far, only one issue is available for this journal.

2006-2007 Clinical Pharmacology onHand Codes

Now Available at the Biomedical Library

The Biomedical Library received new codes for Clinical Pharmacology onHand. The codes are unique to individuals and also different on Palm and Pocket PC. If you need a code, please contact the Biomedical Library at medlib@bbl.usouthal.edu or 460-7044 with your name, department, status and device (Palm or Pocket PC) information.

The following are two sets of instructions, one set for those who are current Clinical Pharmacology registered users and another set for those who are new users.

Current Clinical Pharmacology/Clinical Pharmacology OnHand users:

1. Request a 2006-2007 code from the library (see above).

2. Go to www.clinicalpharmacologyonhand.com and click Subscribe Now.

3. Enter your code into the field when prompted and click Submit.

4. Login with your username and password.Clinical Pharmacology OnHand will be added to your account and you will be taken to the How to Download page.

New Clinical Pharmacology/Clinical Pharmacology OnHand users:

1. Request a 2006-2007 code from the library (see above).

ACP's Pier Available for Your Palm

Palm handheld users at the University of South Alabama now have unlimited access to download STAT!Ref’s point-of-care PDA application ACP PIER (American College of Physician’s Physician Information and Education Resource) with monthly updates.

To access this download, please:

1. Go to ftp://www.statref.com/STAT!RefPDA-PIER.exe.

2. Run STAT!RefPDA-PIER.exe

3. Follow instructions to install STAT!Ref PDA:PIER onto your computer.

4. When installation is complete, perform a HotSync operation to your PDA.

5. Go to http://online.statref.com/regcodemanager/default.aspx?un=uosa&pw=PDA

6. Enter in your Palm OS HotSync Id, your name and your e-mail address and you will receive your registration code. (We will, also, send you an e-mail with your registration code for you to have for your records.)

7. Our PDA application, STAT!Ref PDA:PIER, will ask for this registration code, enter the registration code and you are ready to go. (Once entered the registration code is good for up to 12 months.)

8. STAT!Ref PDA: PIER is updated monthly, so remember to repeat steps 1 – 4 on a monthly basis to keep up with ACP PIER’s latest information.

Regarding the Internet outtage this weekend. This is the full message from Academic Computing:

The Computer Services Center (CSC) power distribution system has been reviewed
by electrical engineers and other power specialists, who require full control of
the Center's electrical system to make critical changes on Saturday, April 8th,
during the hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

All computers and network links that are located in or routed through the CSC
will be down during the outage.  This includes all services hosted through the
CSC, including PAWS/Banner, Hospital Systems, Internet, Library systems, email,
and the dormitory networks. Because of the dependency of computers on
centralized networking services, even your individual office desktop computer
may be inoperable or have limited functionality during this outage.

The CSC is aware that this may cause significant difficulties for individual
users and departments, including Saturday classes. However, if these changes are
not completed, there is a major risk that the Center might in the future lose
power in such a manner that data and hardware would be damaged, with resulting
extended service outages. This particular time slot was selected to minimize
disruptions to weekday University business, but also permit access by the
electrical personnel to support services and electrical supplies they will need
during the outage.  We have already had substantial preparatory work done in a
non-disruptive manner, but these final stages require an outage.

CSC staff will attempt to return full service as soon as possible and earlier
than 6PM if at all possible, but we have been advised by the electrical
engineers that the full outage window may be needed.

The University of South Alabama Biomedical Library announces the addition of AccessMedicine to the library's databases. AccessMedicine contains full-text versions of a number of major medical texts including Hurst's The Heart, Harrison's Online and Metabolic and Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease (MMBID). Among other things AccessMedicine also includes a USMLE study resource, Diagnosaurus (cGraw-Hill's differential diagnosis tool), Practice Guidelines (from Current Practice Guidelines in Primary Care), patient education information, and health news.

Training on GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources

The College of Medicine Graduate Program and the Biomedical Library will Co-sponsor a training course on GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources on January 17 and 18, 2006. Molecular sequence databases and computational biology tools are an important part of nearly all areas of biological and biomedical research. To assist life scientists in using these data and tools, we have invited biologist Peter Cooper, Ph.D. of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to conduct the training course entitled, ?A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources.? The course consists of a 3-hour lecture followed by a 2-hour instructor led computer workshop. During the training session, trainees will gain hands-on experience with the resources at the NCBI site and will learn how to apply these resources in their specific research area. The course provides practical information about GenBank, RefSeq and the integrated genome resources, as well as the other databases maintained at the NCBI. It also provides instruction on effective use of Entrez and BLAST, the two main database search tools. More information about the course may be found at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/FieldGuide.

Evidence Matters Available at Biomedical Library Website

As evidence-based practice has been adopted more and more in health care practice, the Biomedical Library recently added a new EBM database: Evidence Matters (EM). EM is new a search engine to help choose the best therapy options for a specific patient with a confirmed diagnosis. EM provides quick and simple access to research articles from leading peer-reviewed journals. You may build your question easily by using the drop-down menus to obtain meta-analysis of current research and best practices, via personalized tables, graphs, and text. By using standardized statistics and outcomes, you may examine results and perform comparisons.
